Long before Florida became famous for its modern attractions, the Myakka River was shaping the landscape and lives of the people around it. Its history is woven into the beauty that visitors still discover today.
Early English maps identified the waterway as the Asternal River. The name Myakka appeared on maps during the 1800s, reflecting a history that reaches far beyond modern Florida.
In the early 1900s, entrepreneur Bertha Palmer acquired land in the Myakka Valley for ranching, contributing to the area's distinctive cultural and agricultural history.
During the Great Depression, Civilian Conservation Corps crews helped develop Myakka River State Park. The park opened to the public in 1941.
In 1985, a 34-mile segment of the Myakka River received Florida Wild and Scenic River designation, recognizing the extraordinary natural value of this remarkable waterway.
The surrounding Myakka region also invites exploration on land. Myakka River State Park offers hiking and cycling trails through wetlands, prairies, hammocks, and native Florida landscapes. It's another way to discover the region's natural heritage.
